Posture Evaluation In Fargo, ND

“Sit up straight” is advice, not a plan. It assumes you can hold a position through willpower.

For most people, that is not the problem. Posture isn’t primarily a habit; it’s a structural adaptation. When the neck loses its curve, when the upper back rounds, when the head drifts forward of the shoulders, those aren’t things you’re doing. They’re the shape your spine has taken, and no amount of reminding yourself changes shape.

A posture evaluation tells you exactly what that shape is, in numbers.

What Postural Displacement Actually Costs You

Load multiplication. Your head weighs roughly ten to twelve pounds in neutral. As it translates forward of the shoulders, the effective load on the cervical spine and supporting musculature increases substantially.

Accelerated degeneration. Research has documented increased degenerative change in the cervical spine associated with segmental or regional kyphotic alignment. Uneven load produces uneven wear. See Arthritis.

Nerve and disc consequences. Loss of curve changes the dimension of the openings your nerves exit through and shifts load onto discs. See pinched nerve and disc injury.

Downstream mechanics. A forward-tipped shoulder blade narrows the space your rotator cuff passes through. See Shoulder pain.

Signs Worth Getting Measured

  • Your head sits noticeably forward of your shoulders in photos from the side
  • Rounded shoulders or an increasingly rounded upper back
  • Neck and shoulder fatigue by mid-afternoon
  • Chronic tightness between the shoulder blades that never quite resolves
  • One shoulder or hip is visibly higher than the other
  • You’ve lost height
  • Recurring headaches
  • Your posture “collapses” within minutes of correcting it

How We Evaluate Posture

The difference between our evaluation and a visual once-over is measurement.

Postural analysis in three dimensions. We assess your position from the front, side, and back, quantifying displacement of your head, shoulders, rib cage, and pelvis in each plane. This also shows us translations and rotations of both. Postural distortion doesn’t happen in one direction at a time, and evaluating only the side view misses most of it.

Range of motion testing. Which directions are restricted, and by how much. Restriction patterns tell us which structures have adapted to your position.

Muscle balance assessment. Postural adaptation predictably lengthens and weakens some muscles while shortening and overworking others.

Functional and neurological screening. This is how your posture behaves under load, in movement, and over time. A neurological exam is done to also identify nerve involvement.

[Digital X-rays] where indicated. Surface posture shows what your body looks like. Radiographic analysis shows what your spine is doing underneath it. The cervical curve in degrees, forward head translation in millimeters, lumbar and thoracic alignment. This is the difference between a postural observation and a structural measurement, and it’s what a correction plan actually gets built from.

From Measurement to Correction

Your evaluation produces a set of numbers. Those numbers determine everything that follows.

In Chiropractic BioPhysics, corrective care is prescribed as a mirror image of your specific distortion. If your head translates forward and rotates right, your exercises, adjustments, and traction setups all work I the opposite direction to aim for correction. This is why the measurement matters so much. A generic posture program can’t be a mirror image of anything, because it doesn’t know what its mirroring.

Your plan typically includes:

  • Specific adjustments to restore motion where segments are restricted
  • [Spinal remodeling traction] – the primary tool for changing curves, using sustained low-load stress in the corrective direction. This pulls, stretches and remolds the spine.
  • Mirror image corrective exercises – see Therapeutic exercise
  • Ergonomic and daily-habit changes so your environment stops fighting the correction

And then we re-measure. Progress exams repeat the same measurements so you can see, objectively, what’s changed. See poor posture for more on the condition itself.

Frequently Asked Questions About Posture Evaluation

Can bad posture be corrected, or am I stuck with it?

It can be improved, and the controlled research on cervical extension traction, lumbar lordosis restoration, and thoracic kyphosis reduction supports that. How much improvement is realistic depends on how much degenerative change is present and how long the pattern has been established. Younger, more flexible spines change faster but meaningful improvement is achievable at most ages, and we’ll give you an honest estimate based on imaging.

Why can’t I just do posture exercises I found online?

You can try, and general strengthening has value. The limitation is that corrective work needs to be specific to your distortion, and you can’t know your distortion without measuring it. Exercises that mirror the wrong pattern can reinforce the problem. Curve change also requires sustained traction loading, which exercise alone doesn’t provide.

Will a posture brace fic my posture?

Braces can serve as a useful reminder and provide short-term relief. They don’t change spinal structure and worn extensively they can allow the supporting musculature to weaken further. Useful as a supplement, not as a solution.

How long does correction take?

Structural change is usually measured in months. Soft tissue and bone remodel slowly. Most corrective plans run several months of consisted care, with progress imaging along the way. Many patients feel better before the structural change is complete, which is encouraging but isn’t the finish line.

Is posture evaluation only for people in pain?

No, and some of the most valuable evaluations we do are on people with no symptoms at all. Structural change is typically well underway before pain shows up. By the time pain is present, the body is usually trying to tell you there is some underlying going on. Knowing where your or your child’s spine is now is far more useful than finding out in fifteen years.

How Our Posture Evaluation Service Works

1. Corrective

This initial stage focuses on addressing specific spinal misalignments and dysfunctions. Through targeted adjustments and specialized techniques, the goal is to restore proper alignment and function to the spine. This phase often involves intensive care to correct existing issues and alleviate pain.

2. Stabilization

The stabilization stage aims to reinforce the changes made. This involves strengthening surrounding muscles, improving posture, and ensuring that the spine maintains its proper alignment over time. Patients typically engage in exercises and receive ongoing adjustments to support long-term stability.

3. Wellness

The final stage emphasizes maintaining optimal spinal health and overall well-being. Wellness care involves regular check-ups and adjustments to prevent future issues and support a healthy lifestyle. This proactive approach helps patients maintain their progress, enhance quality of life, and promote overall health and wellness.

Dr Alderman is fantastic. Checks your movement before making adjustments and takes his time with you. He doesn’t try to upsell you frequently like some other chiropractors.

Over the past 15 years, I’ve seen several chiropractors, and Dr. Alderman stands out as the one who truly made a lasting difference. He took the time to identify the root cause of my back and hip pain rather than just treating the symptoms. Since working with him, my pain has improved dramatically—it’s honestly been a 180° difference in my day-to-day life. He also helped my wife overcome her neck pain, which made a huge difference for her as well. It’s clear he genuinely cares about his patients and focuses on long-term results rather than quick fixes. I’m incredibly grateful for the care he’s provided and highly recommend him to anyone looking for real, lasting relief.

Dr. Alderman is simply fantastic. I have been seeing him for several years and cannot say enough good things about his standard of care and caring for his patients. I particularly appreciate how he really takes the time to get to know his patients and to understand what their symptoms and concerns are vs. jumping right into a treatment. The attention to detail and focus on my whole well being is greatly appreciated!! I recommend him to all of my family and friends. Seriously - this guy rocks!!

The Peak team is truly the best. I initially came in with constant neck pain that is now gone and poor posture. I now pay way more attention to my posture and find myself correcting it. In general my body feels so much better, I loved getting my adjustments and traction, always feeling SO good when I left.
